Our after-school programs at Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands gives kids grades K-5th a hands-on connection to food, gardens, and community. Register today!

Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands is Seattle’s largest urban farm. The farm is an 8-acre site dedicated to organic food production and distribution, environmental education, and wetland restoration. Kids can dig, plant and explore on a real working urban farm. Our after-school program brings that space to life every week, giving kids a hands-on break from the classroom and a real connection to the food and land around them.
Why Families Choose Our After-School Program
Instead of a screen and a worksheet, your child spends their after-school hours outside, hands in the soil. Here’s what that looks like every week:
- Reliable, structured programs you can count on, with consistent pickup and experienced educators leading every session
- A real connection to food — kids grow it, harvest it, and taste it, not just learn about it from a book
- Grades K-5th welcome, with activities built for where kids are developmentally
- A trusted community program, backed by 30+ years of Tilth Alliance teaching outdoors in Seattle

What Kids Do Each Week
Each session at Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands runs through a themed, hands-on program. Depending on the season, kids might:
- Harvest plants from the garden and use them to make natural dyes and pigments
- Learn real kitchen skills — safe knife use, measuring, chopping, and cooking seasonal recipes
- Harvest and care for fall crops, helping prep the garden for the changing season
- Craft something to take home, from plant-dyed materials to a custom recipe card
Every program is hands-on, seasonal, and connects kids directly to where their food comes from.

About Our Programs
Our youth and family programs connect kids and families from all backgrounds with nature through hands-on experiences in gardens, farms and kitchens. Our educators design fun, immersive, and equitable lessons that build on children’s knowledge and show connections between food, community and our world.
For over 30 years, we’ve brought families together to grow, prepare and eat food. With us, your child will experience the seasons, harvest crops, taste plants, cook dishes, meet worms and pollinators, build compost, do field-based science, make art, and learn about living sustainably.
Our lessons are informed by Learning in Places principles, centering children’s identities and questions through field-based science. Our programs are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards while incorporating family and community expertise in our outdoor learning spaces.
