Our Children’s Learning Garden at the Good Shepherd Center provides a stimulating outdoor learning environment for countless families in our community.
Tilth Alliance’s original Children’s Learning Garden is located behind the Good Shepherd Center in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood. It was created from a former swimming pool more than thirty years ago thanks to the hard work of community members. The garden currently features annual and perennial vegetable beds, giant kiwi vines, fruit trees, container garden demonstrations, a perennial plant explorer trail, worm bins and a compost area. Public bathrooms and a playground/picnic area can be found in the adjacent Meridian Park.
Today, the Children’s Learning Garden provides educational hands-on tours, summer camps, school-year camps, after-school programs, and parent-child workshops for hundreds of people each year. It is one of several gardens where Tilth Alliance teaches kids stewardship through growing food and care of living things. Activities vary by program and often involve tending to our crops, investigating biodiversity, learning about soil, and experiencing the joy of planting, harvesting, and cooking.
This garden is on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish peoples. Children and youth are introduced to the many people, plants, animals, geologic formations, and global connections that form this place — past, present, and future. We work to instill the importance of stewardship and relationship with nature with even the youngest of children who come to learn with us.
