Want to grow more than just annual vegetables? Perennial edible plants are beautiful and multifunctional, providing low-maintenance sources of food, habitat and beauty in our gardens. Join us for this three-day course and learn how you can bring year-round abundance and build resilience in your gardens with perennial edible plants.

In this course, we’ll explore ways to expand your edible landscape and keep it thriving for years to come. We’ll look to the layers of a forest for inspiration as we learn about herbaceous perennials and groundcovers, shrub and cane fruits, fruit and nut trees, and perennial vegetables. Discover the joy of perennial edibles with a community of fellow urban farming and gardening enthusiasts!

This course is appropriate for both beginner and experienced growers who may be interested in adding berries, fruits, herbs, and unique veggies into their gardens.

Topics covered include:

  • Plant selection and tips for success with perennials in the Pacific Northwest
  • Design patterns and strategies
  • Maintenance and long-term care
  • Incorporating annuals among perennials
  • Environmental benefits such as habitat and climate resilience

Activities will include:

  • Tours of three different urban farm & garden spaces
  • Pruning practice
  • Plant propagation
  • Taste testing

Class will take place on Saturdays from 10am-3pm. Dates and locations are:

  • November 7 at Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands
  • November 14 at Good Shepherd Center Learning Garden
  • November 21 at Bradner Gardens Park

Sessions will include a combination of conversational lecture, hands-on activities, plant tours, and time for questions. Participants can expect to finish the program with a set of comprehensive resources and a draft of their own garden design.

Class size is limited to 20 people, and we will be following current public health recommendations. Please be prepared for outdoor activities rain or shine, and dress for the weather.
