Junior Counselors will grow their skill as young leaders throughout the week in mentorship with camp staff\, facilitating small group activities\, and learning what it’s like to teach outdoors\, all the while learning about organic gardening and farming. Junior Counselors will earn a Certificate of Leadership upon completion of the camp. \nThis week’s camp description: \nExperience the joy of harvesting\, cooking\, and tasting in the garden! Let’s discover where our food comes from while creating simple\, tasty snacks for all to enjoy! We will explore flavors and create recipes to culminate in a camper created cookbook. \nTogether\, we will: \n\nHarvest fruits and veggies from the garden to prepare fresh and nutritious snacks\nLearn about our food’s journey from soil to snack\, exploring the seasonal availability of the growing produce in the garden\nUse age-appropriate food preparation techniques. We’ll practice chopping\, slicing\, grating\, measuring and mixing\nPractice following recipes and create our own recipes\nExplore soil\, compost\, and worms and understand their connection to healthy soil and growing food\nGet creative! Compose and design a Soil to Snack Cookbook to take home\nMake new friends while caring for the garden\, expanding our palates\, and practicing our cooking skills!\n\nCooking camps are a smaller group size and have an additional cost for supplies. Dietary considerations and food allergies must be communicated in advance. Please be aware that our kitchen is a shared facility that uses nuts and other allergens. \nJunior Counselors will arrive 30 minutes before campers arrive and stay up to 30 minutes after campers depart. This allows time to prepare and set up for the events of the day and to wrap up and reflect on the day with the summer camp staff (built into the times listed). \nAn orientation will take place before summer camps\, consisting of a tour of the farm/garden\, a general overview of the Junior Counselor role\, leadership training\, and some team building activities as we go through a typical camp day! This will give youth an opportunity to get acquainted with each other\, the space\, and Tilth Alliance staff. Attendance at this orientation is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. Orientation will take place at the site where the Junior Counselor will attend camp: The Good Shepherd Center\, on Wednesday\, June 10\, 6:00-7:00pm. Learn how to start your organic garden\, and continue caring for your crops\, so you can eat fresh\, healthy food year-round. \nThis day-long\, 5-hour workshop is an introduction to fundamental organic gardening topics and includes a conversational lecture in the morning\, followed by an outdoor\, hands-on class in the garden in the afternoon. You’ll leave with the knowledge you need to confidently prepare your beds and start your organic garden from seeds or starts. \nTopics in this class include: \n\nWhat is organic gardening?\nUnderstanding healthy soil\nHow to design and map your garden\nChoosing crops to grow year-round\n\nActivities in this class include: \n\nCultivating and amending garden beds\nPlanting seeds and transplants\nDiscussion of continued care of plants\nTour of garden to observe plant support structures\, season extension and a variety of annual and perennial plantings.\n\nThis in-person workshop will take place on Friday\, August 28 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.\, and will include a half-hour break for lunch. DESCRIPTION:Bioremediation is a collaboration between humans and other organisms to solve pollution problems in the environment. Join us for an introduction to bioremediation to learn more about what kinds of contamination issues we can tackle as gardeners and community members. We’ll discuss common urban soil and water pollutants and focus on solutions. \nIn this class we’ll cover: \n\nLocal (King County) soil and water contamination issues\nPhytoremediation – using plants to remediate soils\nMycoremediation – collaborating with fungi to draw up and bind toxins\nMicrobial remediation – employing bacteria to break down pollution\nBioremediation solutions that can be used in community settings\n\nTogether\, we’ll create wattle filtration systems that you can take home. Join us for this three-day course and learn how you can bring year-round abundance and build resilience in your gardens with perennial edible plants. \nIn this course\, we’ll explore ways to expand your edible landscape and keep it thriving for years to come. We’ll look to the layers of a forest for inspiration as we learn about herbaceous perennials and groundcovers\, shrub and cane fruits\, fruit and nut trees\, and perennial vegetables. Discover the joy of perennial edibles with a community of fellow urban farming and gardening enthusiasts! \nThis course is appropriate for both beginner and experienced growers who may be interested in adding berries\, fruits\, herbs\, and unique veggies into their gardens. \nTopics covered include: \n\nPlant selection and tips for success with perennials in the Pacific Northwest\nDesign patterns and strategies\nMaintenance and long-term care\nIncorporating annuals among perennials\nEnvironmental benefits such as habitat and climate resilience\n\nActivities will include: \n\nTours of three different urban farm & garden spaces\nPruning practice\nPlant propagation\nTaste testing\n\nClass will take place on Saturdays from 10am-3pm.
