Join us on Endangered Species Day to plant the pollinator hillside at Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands in SE Seattle. We are establishing a diverse garden that includes native plants, ornamental perennials, and some common weeds to support the diverse pollinators we have at the farm. We will be planting native plants and powerful perennials and annuals to entice our pollinating friends to visit this summer.
Activities will include planting, adding compost to the planted area, mulching with wood chips and watering the newly planted areas. Educational materials will be available to take home to learn more and Garden Hotline educators will be on site to chat with. We will have information on the pollinators we know frequent our site. We will also have a selection of pollinator plants available to take home to your own garden for $2.00 per pot! Planting party from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Join us after the pollinator hill planting party to take a stroll around the farm and wetlands to learn about our resident and visiting birds. Spy the eagle’s nest that sits at the edge of the farm. Listen for red winged blackbird and song sparrows. Catch a glimpse of a busy hummingbird! In honor of the 17th anniversary of Endangered Species Day we will be guided by Marni Sorin from Tilth Alliance’s community education team on a walk to find and identify 17 species of birds on site. Come walk and learn with us! Farm bird walk from 1-2 p.m.
