Join us for My Cham Tongue, a community Iftar meal honoring Cham cuisine and history through the lens of Chef Nurhaliza Mohamath. Born in Saigon and raised in Seattle’s Rainier Valley, Nurhaliza draws on her Cham Muslim heritage and deep commitment to food sovereignty to create dishes that tell stories of resilience, culture, and connection.
This meal celebrates flavors that honor Cham history while embracing the seasonal abundance of the Coast Salish lands. As always, we will make sure to have vegan and gluten-free options. We focus on sourcing ingredients for the meal from small, local BIPOC farms who use organic growing practices.
Guests will enjoy cultural storytelling, recipes to share, and a lovingly prepared dinner:
- Mushroom Poo Kha Ra
- Grilled chicken with roasted tomato shallot fish sauce
- Lapaa, Shredded Banana Blossom Salad
- Karak Chai
This is a free event. RSVP is required – scroll to bottom for RSVP form.
What to Expect
- Following public health guidelines: masks are optional, and proof of vaccination is not required.
- We will have limited indoor space alongside outdoor, covered seating areas. Please dress for the weather. If you plan to explore the farm, please wear proper footwear.
- Everyone is welcome — invite friends and family to share a meal with us by registering for yourselves and others! We ask that each person register so we can prepare the correct amount of food.
- In case of leftovers, please bring containers/tupperware!
- We welcome donations during the event, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
- On-site parking is available, but we encourage visitors to walk, bike, or take public transit when possible. There is a bike rack on site, and we are a short walk from the 7 and 106 buses and the light rail station.
Please email Nala Thomas, Community Kitchens Project Manager, if you have any special requests or questions about this meal or the Community Kitchen program.
