Junior Counselor: Plant Teachings
Description
Have you ever looked closely at the center of a sunflower or watched bamboo flex in the wind? Natural beings are unique, complex, and wiser than we can comprehend. We have so much to learn, and all we have to do is listen! In this camp, we will train our senses to notice things that are all around us and observe plant and animal superpowers. Together, we will learn how to tend a garden by watering, planting, and saving seeds to support all who call it home. Campers will learn about edible wild plants and taste the dynamic flavors of the landscape. Campers will also create their own field journals where they will create art, poetry, and more. Rooted in this special place, we will practice mindfulness and gratitude for the power and wisdom of nature.
If your teens or preteens love gardening and working with younger children, this camp is for them! Junior Counselors will grow their skill as young leaders throughout the week in mentorship with camp staff, facilitating small group activities, and learning what it’s like to teach outdoors, all the while learning about organic gardening and farming. Junior Counselors will earn a Certificate of Leadership upon completion of the camp.
Junior Counselors will arrive 30 minutes before campers arrive and stay up to 30 minutes after campers depart. This allows time for time to prepare and set up for the events of the day and to wrap up and reflect on the day with the garden educators (built into the times listed).
An orientation will take place before summer camps, consisting of a tour of the farm/garden, a general overview of the Junior Counselor role, leadership training, and some team building activities as we go through a typical camp day! This will give youth an opportunity to get acquainted with each other, the space, and Tilth Alliance staff. Attendance at this orientation is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. Free camp t-shirts will be provided at orientation. There will be two orientation dates: Junior Counselors only need to attend one. These dates are Wednesday, June 14 and Thursday, June 22. Both take place from 6–7:30 p.m. Please indicate your choice at checkout.
