Jr. Counselor: Garden Investigation
Description
If your teens or preteens love gardening and working with younger children, this is for them! Junior counselors help set up and clean up farm or garden activities, assist camp staff, lead small group activities and learn about organic gardening and farming. It’s all the fun of camp, plus the opportunity to develop leadership skills.
Junior counselors come 30 minutes before campers arrive and stay 30 minutes after campers depart to help set-up and clean-up (built into the times listed). Orientation to camp policies and procedures will be provided. Like campers, junior counselors bring their own snack and lunch.
At This Camp
Grab your journals and magnifiers and get ready to put your science thinking caps on! During this session, campers will engage in lessons provided by Learning in Places as they design their own garden-based investigation from start to finish. Using the Children’s Garden at the Good Shepherd Center as our living laboratory, campers will use their curiosity and garden observations to form a collective research question about how to care for the garden this summer. Tilth Alliance’s environmental educators will use the campers’ ideas to guide activities and investigations for the week. Campers will explore the garden to collect data about their question, develop methods for testing, and interview a community expert to help inform their group decision. We will finish up the session by sharing our findings to pass along what we have learned to the next group of campers. Along the way, we’ll cook some delicious dishes, play games, and learn garden techniques.
