Intro to Keeping Honeybees
Description
Are you thinking about buying a honeybee colony this spring and not sure what to do to prepare and how to get started? In this workshop, we will explore the basics of keeping bees focusing on your first year with a colony and what to consider before taking this on. Just curious about honeybees and beekeeping and not sure if getting a hive is in your future, you are also welcome!
Topics covered in this session will be:
- Basic honey bee biology and life cycle
- Setting up a basic bee hive and necessary beekeeping equipment
- Protective equipment and general bee safety
- Basics of hive management and maintaining healthy bee
- Treatment options and pest control (IPM)
- Creating a bee-friendly habitat
- Where to buy bees and equipment
- City and state regulations for keeping bees
This class will include an engaging lecture, with opportunities for questions & discussion. It will take place primarily indoors, in a room with an air filter and with windows and doors open for good ventilation. Please dress for the weather. Class size is limited to about 15 people, and we will be following current public health recommendations.
