Bioremediation is a collaboration between humans and other organisms to solve pollution problems in the environment. Join us for an introduction to bioremediation to learn more about what kinds of contamination issues we can tackle as gardeners and community members. We’ll discuss common urban soil and water pollutants and focus on solutions.

In this class we’ll cover:

  • Local (King County) soil and water contamination issues
  • Phytoremediation – using plants to remediate soils
  • Mycoremediation – collaborating with fungi to draw up and bind toxins
  • Microbial remediation – employing bacteria to break down pollution
  • Bioremediation solutions that can be used in community settings

Together, we’ll create wattle filtration systems that you can take home. These can be placed at your local storm drain or another strategic location.

This in-person class will feature an interactive lecture with slide show, a hands-on activity, and time for questions and answers with the instructor. A detailed outline with recommended resources will also be provided.

About the Instructor

Alex Soleil
Alexandria shares their passion for urban gardening by teaching classes and supporting the Soil and Water Stewardship program as part of the Community Education Team at Tilth Alliance. They are certified in Permaculture Design, completed the Master Composter Sustainability Steward program, and have enjoyed collaborating in Seattle’s community garden spaces for over a decade.
