Description

Beautiful blue dyes from plants? Dyeing with indigo can seem intimidating, but the techniques we will learn in this class will easily produce beautiful shades of blue. We will use both fresh Japanese Indigo and dried, commercially available indigo. Participants will come away from this workshop with a cotton bandana and a silk scarf, along with the confidence to try your hand at extracting botanical blue.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • Simple ways to fresh indigo leaves
  • Cultivating tips and tricks for Japanese Indigo
  • How to create an iron vat with powdered indigo

This in-person class will take place primarily outdoors and will include a conversational lecture and hands-on activities. Class size is limited to 15 people, and we will be following current public health recommendations. Please plan to dress for an outdoor tour as well as garden and kitchen activities.

*Class cost includes $25 materials fee for dye supplies and fabric creations you’ll take home.

**There are two sessions of this workshop. This registration page is for the morning session – you can register for the afternoon session here.
