Description

Ever wanted to grow your own edible mushrooms? Learn the basics of cultivating mushrooms and a simple method for growing them at home without specialized equipment.

In this three hour class you will:

  • Learn about mushroom ecology, growing habits and cultivation basics
  • Explore different cultivation methods, with a focus on simple approaches for growing mushrooms at home
  • Assemble your own oyster mushroom growing kit to take home, using treated straw, wood or newspaper pellets, and other easily obtained materials
  • Have time for questions and answers with a mushroom expert

This in-person class will take place both indoors and outdoors. The indoor portion will be in a room with an air filter and with windows open for good ventilation. The outdoor portion of class will include hands-on activities. Class size is limited to 15 people, and we will be following current public health recommendations.

*Class cost includes materials to assemble your own mushroom growing kit, producing a crop of oyster mushrooms to enjoy in about three to four weeks!

About the Instructor

Milton Tam
Milton Tam has worked, lived, played, and hunted mushrooms in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest for more than 40 years. After he retired he wanted to learn more about mushrooms, and along the way saw a need for and developed a simple mushroom cultivation method for use as an educational tool and to demonstrate the fungal life cycle. His other interests include fishing, wine making, gardening, and golfing. He is a former Vice President of the Puget Sound Mycological Society and the current chair of the cultivation committee.
