Description

Have you heard about hügelkultur or hügelmounds and wondered what they’re all about? This method of gardening mimics the natural forest ecosystem and turns garden debris into useful fertilizer and elevated garden beds. In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to use common yard waste to improve soil fertility, sequester carbon and create dynamic garden beds.

During this participatory workshop, we will:

  • Discuss hügelmound basics and benefits
  • Show real examples of hügel style beds at varying levels of maturity and growing a variety of plants
  • Work together to build and plant a hügelmound

This class will take place outdoors, at Picardo Farm P-Patch where community gardeners have been using the hügelmound technique for almost a decade. Come prepared to walk throughout the 2.25 acre site and work with other participants to build a new garden bed with provided materials. Class size is limited to 15 people, and we will be following current public health recommendations.
