Description

Cultivating fresh blue is simpler than you think! Dyeing with fresh Japanese Indigo can seem intimidating, but the techniques we will learn in this class will easily produce beautiful shades of blue. We will harvest fresh Japanese Indigo from the garden before preparing the leaves for dyeing. Come away from this workshop with a cotton bandana and a silk scarf, along with the confidence to try your hand at extracting botanical blue.

In this workshop, you’ll learn:

  • Two simple ways to use fresh indigo leaves
  • Cultivating tips and tricks for Japanese Indigo

This in-person class will take place primarily outdoors and will include a conversational lecture, garden tour and hands-on activities. Class size is limited to 15 people, and we will be following current public health recommendations. Please plan to bring a mask, disposable gloves, and dress for an outdoor tour as well as garden and kitchen activities.

*Class cost includes $25 materials fee for dye supplies and fabric creations you’ll take home.

About the Instructor

Emily Tzeng
Emily Tzeng
Emily Tzeng lives and farms at Local Color Farm and Fiber in the Puyallup River Valley. She has been growing and dyeing with natural dyes for nearly a decade. At the farm, she tends to many types of vegetables and flowers and a flock of sheep. She enjoys natural dyeing as it connects us to our collective social histories and provides a creative outlet during the farming season.
