Do you love to cook? Want to help nourish the community and take action on food inequities? Join us for a food justice focused cooking camp, perfectly crafted for middle schoolers! Cooking for Community will focus on preparing nutritious meals for the young, old and everyone in between. We will consider food access and equity in Seattle, delve into food waste prevention, invite and feed members of the community, and learn to grow and prepare fresh vegetables to make culturally relevant foods.
We will:
- Develop and practice cooking skills such as knife skills, measurements, food safety, developing & reading recipes, and cooking with heat
- Collaborate with local food programs to help prepare and distribute fresh, local foods for communities and families in need.
- Learn food preservation techniques, how to reduce food waste, and become a food waste warrior
- Participate in a creative taste-off!
- Cook alongside our community partners to learn to prepare fresh, culturally relevant dishes.
- Identify food inequities, explore, and take part in solutions.
Host a shared, interactive meal with campers’ families to build community, featuring seasonal produce.
Cooking camps are a smaller group size and have an additional cost for supplies. Dietary considerations and food allergies must be communicated in advance. Please be aware that our kitchen is a shared facility that uses nuts and other allergens.
