Description
Did you know that 70% of the organic produce grown in Washington State are apples? This delicious and nutritious fruit can be found on farms, in gardens and even as street trees in urban areas. Join us for a celebration of all things apples – from tips on growing your own apple tree to how to make the most of an abundant harvest.
In this dynamic class we’ll discuss:
- Considerations and techniques for growing apple trees in our area
- Pest management techniques to secure an abundant harvest
- Nutritional information
- How to source apples locally for eating and cooking
- Recipes and tips for utilizing all parts of the apple to prevent food waste
Hands-on activities in this class will include:
- Taste-testing different varieties of apples to explore the most appropriate use
- Making a batch of apple sauce
- Baking sweet and savory stuffed apples
- Using a cider press to make fresh apple cider
This class will take place both indoors and outdoors, and will include a mix of conversational lecture, hands-on activities, and a tour of the orchard at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands. We will take a half-hour break mid-way through the day for lunch. Participants will receive an outline with resources and recipes. Cost of class includes materials for taste-testing and take-home projects.
If you have apples that need to be used, let us know and plan to bring them with you. We will have plenty of apples to use and share!
