Juanita Chavarria
Juanita, a graduate of St. Martin’s University, class of 2011, embarked on an unconventional journey after spending over seven years as a stay-at-home wife and mother. Faced with the challenge of reentering the workforce, she decided to return to what helped recenter her during post-partpartum depression: gardening. Drawing from her diverse background in community support, customer service, training, and coaching, Juanita founded Baby Chavs. Before launching Baby Chavs, Juanita pursued a farming internship through Harvest Pierce County. She established her urban farm in Midland, WA, specializing in microgreens as the inaugural crop due to a lack of land accessibility. Today, her farm has expanded to include herbs and edible flowers cultivated in Orting, WA. She supplies to food banks, local restaurants, grocery stores and directly to consumers. Baby Chavs was conceived as more than just a farm; it’s a platform for providing highly nutritious foods and fostering self-sufficiency education. This vision led Juanita to establish “Microgreens for Everyone,” a program dedicated to teaching indoor and patio growing methods and urban livestock keeping while addressing food apartheid within BIPOC and poor communities.
