Homegrown Fertility: Harnessing Local Waste Streams for Resilient Soils
The Community Wellness Project is exploring ways to improve food system resilience on the North Olympic Peninsula by reducing reliance on imported soil amendments such as organic fertilizer, compost, and agricultural lime. We are researching how farms and communities can produce clean, biologically active soil amendments from local waste streams on a small to medium scale. This session will cover the benefits of localized fertilizer production and composting systems, challenges around sourcing clean feedstocks, lessons learned from pilot projects, and future opportunities for community-scale nutrient cycling.
